One of the most common questions I get from couples is:
“How should we plan our wedding day timeline?”
As a Galway wedding photographer, I’ve photographed many church & civil weddings across the west of Ireland, & timing is everything when it comes to relaxed photos & an enjoyable day.
So here’s a realistic, stress-free Irish wedding timeline guide, based on a typical real wedding & what actually works on the day.
My wedding example:
- 1pm ceremony, 5:30pm bell for a 6pm meal start.
- The bride is getting ready 30 mins from the ceremony location.
- The ceremony location is 30 mins from the reception venue & there are photo locations en-route.
- There are 180 guests.
Morning Prep – Getting Ready
For morning coverage, I recommend:
🕰 1 hour with the bride
⏰ Starting 2 hours before the ceremony
➕ Plus travel time if needed
Example: 1pm Church Ceremony + 5:30pm dinner bell for 6pm meal
If the bride is getting ready 30 minutes from the church:
- 10:30 – 11:30 → I’m with the bride
- 11:30 – 12 noon → Travel from preps to the church
- 12:00 → I arrive at the church
- 12:00 – 1pm → Church details, Groom & Groomsmen shots
Important Morning Tips
If I’m with you from 10:30am, I strongly recommend:
✔ Hair & makeup finished by 10am
✔ Time to eat something
✔ Bathroom break
✔ Relax & enjoy chats with your bridal party
This avoids rushing & keeps the morning calm & enjoyable.
Dress Time
Ideally:
👰 In your dress by 11am
This allows:
- Bridal portraits
- Photos with parents & siblings
- Natural moments with your bridal party
All before I leave for the church at 11:30.
Ceremony Location Coverage
From 12 noon, I’ll be at the ceremony venue capturing:
- Groom & groomsmen arrivals
- Guests arriving
- Church / ceremony room details
- Final setup shots
This is an important part of your story & often overlooked.
Church Ceremony & Greeting Line
For Irish church weddings:
⛪ 1pm ceremony
👋 Greeting line afterwards
⏰ This can take up to 2 hours
So realistically:
- Ceremony finishes around 2:30pm
- Greeting line ends around 3pm
This is completely normal for Irish weddings & should be factored into your plans.
What Happens After the Ceremony?
Still to fit in before dinner:
📸 Family photos
📸 Location couple portraits
🍾 Mingling time with guests
This is why I always recommend:
A Minimum 4 hours + travel time from the ceremony start time to meal bell time
This allows:
- No rushing
- Relaxed photos
- Time to enjoy your guests
- Buffer for delays
Why Timelines Matter (From a Photographer’s Point of View)
A good timeline means:
✔ You’re not stressed
✔ Photos feel natural
✔ You enjoy your day
✔ No one is shouting about time
As a Galway wedding photographer, my job is to:
- Help you plan realistically
- Keep things flowing
- Adapt if things run late (they always do 😉)
